Wildlife Drawings
Sturgeon River Remembrance
This drawing comes from the old logging camp #26 on the Sturgeon River, a lazy stream that wanders through the Hiawatha National Forest. It is here that loggers and railroaders from the early years of the century, and later, trout fishermen, all left their footprints on the banks of this wilderness river. While I worked on removing the stump and saw blade from the tangled log jam at the abandoned railroad trestle, my fishing companion caught three nice brookies. Type.

Territorial Oak - Print
Viewed through the branches of a spreading oak at the edge of a small clearing, three bucks, antlers scraped and ready for action, feed beneath the bare branches. The tree is a gathering place for the feeding deer as they prepare for their annual reproduction and ready themselves for the harshness of the onrushing winter. Pencil and Ink.

Early Snow - Print
An old rusted tricycle has been abandoned under an apple tree. The scene shows the trike as a childhood memory with apples fallen from the snow covered branches above and chickadees perched on the wheels. Behind the October snow, three deer cross the field to feed on the frozen fruit. Pen, pencil and water color.

Double Haul - Mounted Print
The drawing ”Double Haul,” has a double meaning. It refers to catching two trout while fishing a two fly rig, in this case two hex flies, and also to a style of casting. The drawing was inspired by my friends and fly fishing mentors, Mike and Ray who were casting the Muskegon river when the event transpired. The story was related during one of many campfires. For over 30 years these campfires have been shared with a close group of friends and the camaraderie and stories are as important as the fishing.

Ruffed Grouse - Mounted Print
Originally inspired by the old Essex car wheel that was used on an old hay wagon abandoned on a friend's farm. I knew as as soon as I saw the weathered and rusted wheel that is was going to be in a drawing. I started several images before I saw the arrangement of field daisies that my wife photographed and the drawing just came together after that. I added the partridge after listening to one drum while I created the image.

An Old Boat - Mounted Print
This drawing of an old fishing boat a bit past its prime came from a little lake in the U.P. When I first discovered it, it had wild flowers in it and at the time I knew it would become a drawing. It was several years before I got back to take pictures and several attempts at drawing before I was happy with the result. When I look at this picture it reminds me of my brothers. They were with me when we went back to take the photos and yes, it seems little activities with them will result in little adventures. We got the truck really stuck.

Next Generation - Mounted Print
I convey the past, present and future of whitetail deer in this drawing. I did this by illustrating a winter shed antler from a trophy deer, a doe and a newborn fawn. Usually antlers are eaten by rodents, but if an antler was encased in ice or not found by mice it could last until spring. From this I tried to convey the future generations of a big buck.
It was a wonderful coincidence that after I finished drawing the doe and antler, my wife and I spotted a doe that had just given birth outside our kitchen window. I cautiously took pictures of the fawn, made sure the doe returned to the newborn and proceeded to finish the next generation.

Back to Nature - Print
Water color, pencil and pen. This drawing that I was going to call,"John's Deere with deer,"started taking shape when I got permission to hunt on my neighbers north 80 for rabbits. I had noiced the old John Deere several times when hunting this old homestead and the inetresting "paddlewheel,"feature.
A couple of friends and a brace of beagles joined forces for the first good snow of the year; we were intent on chasing rabbits or beagles, depending on the behavior of both. When I saw the design of the fresh white snow against the weathered look of the tractor. Later I went back to take the pictures for this drawing.
